Tony DeAngelo May Not Be Getting Traded After All
Just a few short weeks ago it looked like the Flyers were moving anyone and everyone via trade. So far Kevin Hayes, Ivan Provorov, Hayden Hodgson, and Kevin Connauton have been shipped out. One of the bigger names that was supposedly on his way out was defenseman Tony DeAngelo.
It was all but a done deal with DeAngelo heading back to Carolina in what was essentially just a cap dump for the Flyers. Then the NHL Stepped in…
Basically the league said because it was not a full year since DeAngelo was traded from the Canes to the Flyers he couldn’t be traded back until a full year passed.
Well, the year passed on July 8th and here were are on July 11th with no clear answer as to what’s going on.
There’s a reason for that, sources have stated that the Hurricanes may be looking to bring in defenseman Erik Karlsson from the San Jose Sharks. If they Canes decided that’s the move they would rather make than it would mean DeAngelo would not longer be a need for them.
That would then leave the Flyers looking for a new trade partner to get DeAngelo off of their hands. General Manager Danny Briere sort of has his hands tied at the moment with this DeAngelo situation. If Carolina wants him they have a deal in place that just needs to be finalized with the league. However, if they think that Karlsson is more of a value to them then DeAngelo there’s nothing really Briere can do and you certainly do not want him giving away more assets than he has to just to shed a guys salary.
When it comes to this situation it is constantly changing and DeAngelo could end up back on the Hurricanes as soon as I hit publish on this blog. But, let’s not all be super shocked here if this deal does indeed fall through because the Hurricanes are most certainly looking elsewhere and its just a matter of who they want more between DeAngelo or Karlsson.
It is also very possible that Briere does have a backup plan for if this deal with Carolina does fall through and the bottom line is I would be shocked if DeAngelo is on the roster come training camp.
