BREAKING: Flyers Trading For Problem Defenseman
Yup, that’s same Tony DeAngelo that got into a fight with his goalie and was basically kicked off the New York Rangers. Also the same Tony DeAngelo that has been the cause of a lot of drama throughout his career on and off the ice.
There is a reason that Carolina didn’t want him and the guy has seemed to be nothing but drama wherever he has gone. On the ice I don’t think he is horrible and sure maybe he helps the Flyers in certain areas such as the powerplay. He does have back to back 50 point seasons which is nice but is he really worth the possible drama he brings?
DeAngelo and John Tortorella are going to be an interesting dynamic and it could go really bad really quick or somehow some way maybe they end up being best friends.
For a team that has been trying to change the culture this isn’t the type of guy you bring in. I really have no idea what the hell Chuck Fletcher is doing. Quite frankly I am not sure even he knows what he is doing at this point, it just seems like he is trying to make these crazy moves as a last ditch effort to save his job.
Giving up three draft picks for DeAngelo is insane and to make things even worse he signed a two year extension with an AAV of $5 Million. You know because the Flyers have all of this cap space to do things like that. The picks are a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th spread out over the next few years. The best part is Chuck is trading away all of these future picks and if these dumb moves don’t work out he probably won’t be here after this season.
So to recap this “Aggressive Retool” that is currently going on is probably going to end up setting the Flyers back for 10 more years. It is so damn hard to be positive about this team right now and bringing in DeAngelo doesn’t help that. It also probably means that Ryan Ellis isn’t going to play this season or possibly ever again.
Now we have two guys both who are average at best defenseman in DeAngelo and Risto who are making $5 million a year. Still don’t have any cap space, no true dynamic player, no draft capital, and what feels like no plan at all.
I don’t know man, maybe I’ll be dead wrong and Chuck Fletcher is actually a genius and were going to win the Stanley Cup. But right now I am really starting to question why I continue to torture myself by being a fan of this organization. 27 years of misery and there’s no end in sight I hate it here.
