Not Even Fedex Field’s Rails Can Stop the Eagles

A year ago the Eagles hit rock bottom when the national media flayed them for putting Nate Sudfeld in the 4th quarter of their meaningless season finale on Sunday Night Football. Weeks later the Doug Pederson Era was over, followed by Carson Wentz’s departure to the Colts. It seemed like what was supposed to be a Golden Era of Eagles football was turning into a lengthy period in the dark abyss. No remaining members of the 2017 team were ever going take part of the postseason for the Birds ever again.

It seemed to be that way, until now. The first half of the season seemed like a tank-job and the only thing fans had looking forward to was 3 potential 1st round picks in next season’s draft. They had a 2-5 record and fans were going irate over too much passing and coach Nick Sirianni’s new phrases about fertilization.

Fast forward to the dawn of 2022 and they’ve gone 7-2 since then. While most of their wins have been against non-quality opponents and bad quarterbacks, they’re still going out and doing what playoff teams are supposed to do and take care of business.

Remarkably, the Eagles look like they’re back on track after falling so hard in 2020. While there’s a new quarterback and head coach along with several young faces on skill positions, the core veterans have guided the franchise back to relevance.

Like their other two division games crammed in a short period of time, the Bird’s latest game against Washington had a frustrating first half before they got it together in the second half, a microcosm of their season. And just when it looked like they were going back to their old habits of blowing a close game, Rodney McCloud made a game sealing interception in the end-zone. By the end of the night the Birds were officially in the playoffs for the 4th time in 5 years, the best 5 season stretch for the franchise since 2000-2004.

Whether or not they win the mostly meaningless game next Saturday against Cowboys, (while plenty of veterans landed on the COVID-positive test.) or if they somehow manage to pull off the unthinkable win a road playoff game against an elite NFC team, the 2021 Eagles season has been a success and everything from here on in is gravy.

The best Eagles news of this weekend is also the fact that Jalen Hurts was not injured when the Fedex field rail collapsed and a bunch of Eagles fans landed right next to him. Usually this would be a shocking headline, but this is Fedex field we are talking about and any time you think that stadium and Washington organization can’t top themselves in dysfunction they manage to pull it off.
