Hiring Daryl Morey Could Kickstart The Process 2.0

The past year has been brutal for Sixers fans. After coming a few bounces short of reaching the Eastern Conference Finals a series of bad offseason moves saw the Sixers decline from a potential contender into an average team again. Philadelphia’s faith in the organization from ownership down to the players became extremely low and it looked liked we’d have to endure years of declining, thinking about what could have been.

But recently things have been getting better for the Sixers with the unexpected availably and hiring of NBA champion head coach Doc Rivers, a huge upgrade over Brett Brown. Now things could potentially get even better with the breaking news of Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey stepping down.

Having been at the helm in Houston for 13 years, Morey became one of the most acclaimed GMs in the NBA thanks to transitioning from the T-Mac/Yao Ming Era of Rockets basketball into the James Harden Era that’s seen eight consecutive playoff appearances and two trips to the Western conference finals. His best team was the 2017-18 squad that added Chris Paul and were more effective with 3 point shooting than even the Warriors. His plan for a championship was coming together when up 3 games to 2 against Golden State before a Chris Paul injury sidelined him for Game 6 & 7. The Rockets also stunningly missed 27 consecutive 3 point attempts in Game 7 which they would have won had they been slightly better at it.

Since then the Rockets too have been on the decline even with the addition of Russell Westbrook. Now with coach Mike D’Antoni leaving Morey himself has called it a day in Houston, resigning just a few days after the end of the NBA bubble playoffs.

Despite running the Rockets for over a decade (and causing a firestorm with his “controversial” tweets about Hong Kong that exposed the NBA’s hypocrisy) Morey is still under 50 years old and has a lot more years left to run a franchise. And if the Sixers really care about putting their mess of a team back on track, they should do whatever they can to hire him.

Like Process messiah Sam Hinkie, Morey has a vision for building a contending team in groundbreaking ways, only he’s more present in the public eye than Hinkie ever was. As the new face of the Sixers organization, he could start his own Process and has enough clout and respect from the league to not be interfered with.

It’s hard to imagine what the Sixers would look like with Morey leading the way. Will he manage to trade key players away from some of his own like James Harden? Will he add three point shooters to finally complement Embiid and Simmons? Whatever he does, it has to be better and more interesting than how the Sixers have run things over the past few years.

Even if the Sixers don’t wanna make Elton Brand jobless this year, they can let him step down and be reassigned to a new position like Matt Klentak.

By hiring Daryl Morey to lead the Sixers, faith in The Process would return with a new leader. Also…
