The Phillies Just Bad News Bears’d Themselves Out Of A Win

In the 8th inning of tonight’s Orioles vs Phillies game, we saw a bare handed jump pass from a pitcher, Tim Tebow Florida style to throw out a runner stealing home. It wouldn’t even register as one of the Top 5 whackiest moments of the game that was.

The Phillies Bad News Bear’s themselves out of a comeback win not once but TWICE in a 10-9 in extras to the lowly Orioles.

The bullpen, and stop me if you’ve heard this before, could not record outs as fast as they were giving up runs. It put the Phillies in a 5-3 hole in the bottom of the 8th. What happened next felt like at the time, what could be a momentum changing win for the Phils. Bryce Harper went oppo for a two run home run. And then Jean Segura crushed one to go up 6-5. If only Segura rounded rounded the bases, and just kept on running the entire way to his house.

Hector Neris, who is treated like a Greek God amongst men in that bullpen, blew the save.

What the hell is Jean Segura doing roaming what felt like MILES to the first base side to catch that infield pop-up? Rhys Hoskins was camped under it and could have literally set up a camping tent under that ball before it came down in his glove. Instead, Jean Segura ran a 40 yard dash at the combine underneath the ball while screaming like it’s Picketts Charge. He ended up just tripping on the mound and dropping it.

After tying that game back up to send it to the extras, you had to feel pretty good. Even with the bullpen pitching with a runner on base, it just felt like the Phillies bats were going to fight back no matter what happened. But even in a night where the bats came alive, they couldn’t escape Roman Quinn’s baseball IQ:

Get rid of the low IQ players. It’s a 60 game sprint, one game like this wild affair can ruin your shot. No time for the idiots who play you out of a win. Roman Quinn should have two options at this point: go to Lehigh or quit and go run track. Even though he probably can’t do the 100M sprint without straining his hamstring.

Joe Girardi is a good manager. There is no manager who can reform some of the mental blunders that occur with this team. The old adage is you can’t fix stupid. When you aren’t the most talented team, the mental errors pile up and you lose games like this.
