Why the Eagles Second Round Pick Is Just As Important As Last Night’s

After taking some time throughout the day to reflect on the selection of Jalen Reagor, I feel like there are three mindsets that Eagles fans have regarding the pick:

  1. Not excitement but not anger.  Sort of in between.  A wait and see approach is the best way I can describe it, and this is the camp that I personally fall into.
  2. Anger at not taking Justin Jefferson.  We had heard throughout the entire process leading up to the draft that Jefferson was their guy.  That if he was there at 21 the Eagles would take him and possibly consider trading up for him.  Matt Miller of Bleacher Report even reported that in was written in ink that the Eagles would draft Jefferson.  So when he was available and was passed over, it came as a huge shock.
  3. Anger at not trading up for Ceedee Lamb.  This where I feel a lot of anger at Howie Roseman has been directed today.  All offseason he has been saying that they need to get playmakers for Carson Wentz and one of the top playmakers in the draft is falling and you do not trade up to get him.  It was being reported that it would have cost the eagles their second round pick, if not more, to trade up.

That is why this second round pick becomes so important.  Instead of trading up for Lamb, Howie chose to hold onto this pick because he felt that Reagor and whatever they do with the 53rd selection would be more valuable than trading up to get Lamb.  So after tonight is done fans can sit down and have a much clearer understanding of what the Eagles plan was for the draft as a hole.

As it looks right now, for the rest of their careers, Reagor and the 53rd pick will be compared to the career of Ceedee Lamb.
