Eagles Sign Philly Native Will Parks To 1-Year Deal
When Malcom Jenkins was released, a plan for the Eagles secondary was unknown. Losing their leader, the secondary needed a new voice. A new direction.
This direction was lead by all-pro & 3x pro-bowler Darius Slay. Slay was added to give the Eagles the shutdown corner they have been waiting for in the last decade.
In addition to Slay, the Eagles brought back Jalen Mills & Rodney McLeod.
With three of the four secondary positions somewhat locked up, one piece was missing. On Saturday, the Eagles filled that final spot.
Philly native Will Parks agreed to a 1-year deal with the Eagles.
Parks, 6-1 194lbs, was a former 6th round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2016 out of Arizona.
In 62 career games, Parks has started 15 (10 over last 2 seasons), has 4 career INTs, & has averaged 37 tackles per season.
Even with the rumor that Jalen Mills could move to safety, the safety position was still in need of another player. But, will Mills versatility & now the addition of Parks, the Eagles have depth at both positions.
The one thing Jim Schwartz hasn’t had in his tenure with the Eagles is depth. Depth that allows him to run multiple different coverage packages per game.
Over the past two seasons, the Eagles defense has been very predictable. Off-man coverage was the norm & teams began to exploit the common coverage.
Now, with a shutdown corner (Slay), cover safety (McLeod), & two versatile DBs (Mills & Parks), Jim Schwartz can throw multiple coverages & packages at a team every week. With the transformation of the secondary, Schwartz now has the tools to play any defensive package he chooses.
Not to mention nickels & secondary corners, Maddox-LeBlanc-Douglas, Schwartz has the ammo & depth to keep the opposing offense on their toes.
The defensive line still needs another role-player. Yannick NgaKoue & Everson Griffen are two names to keep an eye on.
Losing Malcom is going to be a tough hole to fix. But, instead of filling his hole, the Eagles have chosen to improve elsewhere and expand on their already strong front-7.
