Is Gritty Going To Mascot Jail?
Most every sports team in the United States, no matter what sport, has a mascot. A mascot that is supposed to represent the team and its views. Something the Philadelphia Flyers never had except for one year in 1976. But, that all changed last season with the announcement of Gritty.
Gritty, who is supposed to resemble the Flyers grit & hard nosed style of play, did not come off at first how the team and developers wanted. The debut of Gritty was met with boos, bronx cheers, & the occasional laughter when something went wrong.
However, that is when Gritty started to come to the liking of the Philadelphia faithful. When Gritty did something wrong or Gritty did something “off-the-script” to say the least. These actions led to Gritty becoming liked by the Philadelphia fans.
Unfortunately, a claim of an action similar to what made Gritty who Gritty is today, may have gotten Gritty in a little bit of trouble.
According to the claim, the father of the 13-year-old child claims that Gritty went after his son. That Gritty left his seat, charged after his son, and punched him in the back of the head at a Flyers season ticket holder event.
The Flyers response refuted any of this action and stated…
“Have investigated your allegations and cannot identify anyone who witnessed the incident as you described it. It is unfortunate that you and your son had a bad experience at our Gritty Photo Event. Therefore, we are offering an opportunity to discuss a creative way to restore your son’s love of the Philadelphia Flyers.”
Since the emergence of Gritty last season, Gritty has his fair share of confrontations. Some have been more aggressive than others, but nothing that has ever crossed the line or you would have thought crossed the line.
Normally everything Gritty has done has been to a Flyers employee in a different jersey or a fan that has agreed to participate in Gritty’s antics. But, on 80s night, Gritty looked to somewhat surprise the dancer who was attempting to reenact Dirty Dancings Time of my life scene.
The dancer was hit in the face by a cake thrown by Gritty. She didn’t look like she knew the cake was coming. But, she laughed, smiled, and continued as a back-round dancer to Gritty as the song finished.
It is still unknown what is to come of this claim. But, the Philadelphia PD is now involved. Not feeling satisfied with the Flyers response, the father has asked Philadelphia PD to look into the claim.
