Eagles Need a Fresh Start, New Faces on Offensive Staff

As we all breathe a sign of relief that Mike Groh has been fired as offensive coordinator, there inevitably comes the next step of actually choosing the (competent) man who is going to replace him.  These are just a few names who I thought could come in and succeed at the job.

Pat Shurmur

Pat Shurmur was the first name that popped into my head when I heard Groh was fired.  I know he has some stink on his name because he was just fired by the Giants, but the man is a really good coordinator. Shitty head coach, but good coordinator.  He made Case Keenum look amazing in 2017 and has had success everywhere he has gone as an OC.  Plus he knows the system.  He should be someone that is high on the Eagles list to bring in.

Jay Gruden

Another failed head coach from the NFC East that people may not be fond of, Jay Gruden has more than held his own as a coordinator.  He was in control of the Bengals offense when Andy Dalton was having his best seasons and the Bengals were in the playoffs multiple times.  Yes, he failed in Washington, but he did win the division once and come one, who hasn’t failed miserably for the Redskins these last 20 years?  He wold bring a fresh set of eyes in and could command respect from Doug and the players.

Jason Garrett

Nah, I’m just fucking with ya. Wanted to see how many old NFC East coaches that could be named before there was outrage.

Marty Mornhinweg

I can already hear people yelling at their computer screens ” No, no, no, no, no, no!!!!” I understand.  Hear me out.  He would not be calling the plays.  That is already a plus.  He knows this offense like the back of his hand.  He knows how it all works and can impart so much knowledge to Carson about the little intricacies about it.  Also, he will not be a yes man.  If he thinks something is stupid or will not work, you better believe that he is going to speak his mind and say something.  A long shot for sure, but a name worth considering.

Jim Caldwell

Caldwell is a guy who hasn’t really gotten many fair shakes in the league.  He was fired as Colts coach after they went 2-14 because Peyton Manning was hurt.  He was fired by the Lions after making the playoffs twice and finishing 9-7 in his final year, because apparently 9-7 isn’t good enough for the Lions.  You forget though that he was the QB coach for Peyton Manning during his run of dominance, and was the Ravens offensive coordinator when they won the Super bowl in 2012 and made Joe Flacco look like an elite quarterback.  He has the resume and the pedigree that would add a lot to the offense.

Duce Staley

Probably a long shot considering the team most likely wants to bring in someone from outside the organization considering Groh was such a massive failure, but this man deserves a shot.  He has done an amazing job as the running backs coach, the players love him, and he seems to understand the flow of the game and what is required of him.  Not going to happen, but wanted to shout out Duce because he is awesome and deserves an OC shot somewhere.

Those are just a few candidates that I feel the Eagles should look at for the now vacant offensive coordinator position.  No matter who they choose I can say one thing with confidence: whoever it is will probably be better than Mike Groh.
