Alshon Jeffery’s Injury Hampers the Eagles In Every Way Possible
The news came down yesterday that Alshon Jeffery’s season has come to an end due to a “foot” injury. While the extent of the injury is still not known or really what the injury is, the news isn’t shocking at all. Anytime there’s no contact, the player takes one step and his leg gives out, that’s usually the worst case scenario. This seems like the Kevin Durant saga all over again (calf to Achilles)
For the Eagles, Alshon suffering a serious injury is terrible for a multitude of reasons.
Firstly, the most present issue is that the team is losing a productive receive at an already depleted position. Alshon hasn’t been himself all year. He’s been unhealthy and out of rhythm. But my God, if Nelson Agholor isn’t healthy this week the options are: JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Greg Ward and Michel. Yeah, I can’t figure out why Carson Wentz has struggled this year either.
Why this also hurts the Eagles is because this completely demolishes any trade value Alshon may have. Despite his contract being reworked and extended this past offseason (guaranteed next season), a fresh start seems needed for all parties. Alshon doesn’t seem to want to be here, he’s not producing the way a #1 receiver should for the Eagles, and the fans have soured on him as well. Anyone who’s watched an Eagles game this season knows the organization needs to retool the receiver position to get more explosive. It would make sense to move on from Alshon and get younger. But, teams don’t exactly go for players coming off surgery who can’t complete any offseason workout programs.
If the Eagles are then indeed stuck with Alshon (and Alshon is stuck here much to his chagrin), the beginning of his following season could be in jeopardy. Much like after the Super Bowl season when he had surgery on his rotator cuff, he will spend the spring/summer rehabbing instead of getting reps with the team. If the injury is indeed related to his Achilles, there should be serious worry he won’t be healthy enough to play a full season come 2020.
Alshon Jeffery could potentially be following the Kevin Durant model. From champion and hero to swirling questions about his future with the team soon after. A calf injury leads to an Achilles injury. Limping off the court/field is the last memory the fan base will ever have of them before their tenure with the team comes to an end.
