Matt Klentak’s Worst Feat as General Manager Is Yet to Come

As we dip into another week where Gabe Kapler awaits in baseball purgatory, more confusion surrounds the Phillies front office. A group that had many of their decisions go awry during the season, now starts the offseason the same way.

While it’s Kapler whose job seems to be hanging in the balance, it’s Matt Klentak who the fans want the Phillies to rid of. With the startling lack of farm system talent and development of players at the major league level, Klentak is the one who should be on trial.

But, what if I told you that betting on Vince Velasquez to be a reliable starter who could consistently make it five innings a start wasn’t the worst thing Matt Klentak has done as General Manager of the Phillies? What if I told you that the worst is still yet to come?

This week, the Eagles will start a three game road trip spanning the rest of October. They are the only team in the NFL who will play three straight road games this year. If there are Raiders fans reading this, yes the NFL fucked you over. No one wanted to show up to your shitty baseball field so one of your home games is the London game and now the team won’t touch down back in Oakland until November. That sucks. But for the Eagles, the reasoning behind the prolonged road trip is a ridiculous one.

When the NFL schedule-makers pulled this road game stunt on the Eagles, it was their expectation that the Phillies would be occupying the South Philly stadium district with playoff baseball. To avoid conflict, they sent the Eagles packing. Due to Klentak’s lousy roster moves, the Phillies are sitting on their couch for the MLB playoffs and the Eagles are the ones screwed because of it.

Look, I’m fully confident in the Birds going 2 for 3 on this road trip. Every team they play during that stretch has their flaws. And if you can’t beat Kirk Cousins, we have no business discussing playoff aspirations, no matter what else the schedule throws at us.

But still, it is so 2019 Phillies for the 2019 Phillies to be fucking over the city of Philadelphia, even after the 2019 Phillies are done playing baseball for the year.

Fire Matt Klentak.
