Carson Wentz Has Officially Responded to the Article Calling Him a Selfish and Stubborn Egomaniac
By now you know the story. Carson Wentz. Selfish. Egomaniac. Philly Voice. Santoliquito. Philly Voice. Marcus Hayes? Teammates to the rescue. Hit piece.
I, for one, thought this story was dead. But Carson himself recently spoke to select reporters and made his case. HERE’S (<—) the full transcript from Zach Berman. Then here’s a few quotes that warranted a raise of the eyebrow.
On Wentz’s General Thoughts About the Article:
“I know who I am, first of all. I know how I carry myself, I know I’m not perfect, I know I have flaws. So I’m not going to sit here and say it was inaccurate and completely made up, I’m not going to do that. But at the end of the day, I will say our locker room is really close.”
On His Reaction to the Criticism:
“Initially I’m like trying to figure out who could it have been. In your mind you play detective. But then you’re like, ‘Does it really matter?’ If there were issues, I think if someone did say those things, they’re probably like, ‘Yeah maybe that’s now how it should have came out.’”
Reflecting on the Knee Injury:
“It’s a process. As far as injury prevention, I felt great. I didn’t feel – I felt confident, all those things – but as far as being explosive and all those things, I never quite, and I’m not going to use it as an excuse by any means, but I watched the tape from two years ago, you watch last year, you can say I wasn’t quite there as far as mobility stuff. And that’s something I’ll keep working through.”
I loved all of Carson’s answers. He admitted fault on some issues, he took the high road. He said he did some self-reflection to see how he could be a better teammate. (He also said he reads the Bible every day after breakfast which is so Carson). His answers were great, but I don’t need to hear them at all.
Carson Wentz should not have to defend himself against some slander by a guy from The Philly Voice with 1,700 followers. He doesn’t need to vindicate himself for the public or Eagles fans alike. I can believe he is somewhat selfish or stubborn and still trust him. The wise poet, Drake once said, “diss me and you’ll never hear a reply for it”. Obviously, he didn’t follow his own advice, but Carson should. I like my GOATs to ignore media criticism and just win. Remember that hit piece last year on Tom Brady and his trainer causing turmoil for Patriots management? Remember when Brady threw for 500 yards in a Super Bowl that same year then came back and won again this year? Do you remember a response from him to that story? Not a chance. I appreciate Carson taking the high road with this, but stop giving the story legs.
I hate this ever came up. Once there’s a stigma or a label attached to you, it’s hard to rid yourself of it. There’s a whole generation who sees Michael Jackson as a pedophile instead of a pop star sensation and all it really took was an Eminem music video. Any time something goes wrong, any time the Eagles lose, people will circle back to the Stubborn Carson hit piece.
Fortunately, I don’t have a feeling we will worry about too much losing going forward. I am so excited for the 2019 season already, I was up Googling when the NFL schedule gets released mere hours after the Super Bowl. A full, healthy offseason for Carson (and many others) will do wonders. In the Super Bowl season, with a year of the Wentz/Pederson era under their belts, the team functioned with comfort. They had their rhythm, they knew their roles. After the Super Bowl, everyone spent the off-season either on an operating table, in physical therapy, or on a book tour. This offseason, with Carson focused on football and not knee ligaments, I may start tailgating at The Linc tomorrow. I am ready, this team will be ready. And this dumb “bad teammate” thing will be buried.
