If The Phillies Dont Sign Bryce Harper, John Middletown Will Become Philadelphia Enemy #1
Another Bryce Harper article? Sort of, YES. But, this article is all about Phillies Owner, John Middletown, recent comments on his plans for the Phillies offseason.
In an interview before Middletown left for the owners meeting on Friday, he broke his recent silence about the Phillies offseason plans. Middletown had this to say about what the Phillies will do this offseason…
“We’re going into this expecting to spend money — and maybe even be a little stupid about it. We just prefer not to be completely stupid.”
Those words are going to make or break John Middletown. The definition of stupid will define if John Middletown will become a hero or public enemy #1 in Philadelphia.
If you read that the right way, Middletown’s statement says there is not a dollar on this earth he would not spend this offseason. Thus, meaning money is not an issue to signing Bryce Harper.
The fit is there. The Phillies need a star and Harper would be that star. But, what could possibly hold up a deal?
If money isn’t the issue, how could the Phillies possibly do to mess this up? Other than Bryce Harper just not wanting to come here. Nothing in this world could stop Harper from becoming the leagues highest paid player in a Phillies uniform.
Unless, Middletown gave himself a backdoor out of this with the we cant be completely stupid comment. Which still isn’t an excuse to not offer any number possible to Harper.
When you say we are going in expecting to spend, you cant retract that statement and say something on the lines of we cant be spend it stupidly. It is like saying you can spend all the money in the world the right way and it still be the wrong way.
Therefore, if the Phillies do not sign Bryce Harper. John Middletown will become Philadelphia Enemy #1.
