Inside The Rink Access : Flyers Training Camp Day 2
Another season of Flyers hockey is upon us. The start of a new season culminates with Flyers training camp. Lets take a closer look at the Flyers Training Camp.
Morning Session – Group 1
With the mass amount of players in camp, the Flyers are split into two groups. Now, these groups are normally meaningless. However, some interesting line combinations were used during session 1.
The group was split into five different lines. Three of which are more than likely extras or possible lines for the Phantoms. But, two lines could possibly be used on opening night.
Those two lines were Giroux-Couturier-Simmonds and Laughton-Vorobyev-Konecny. Now, I do not believe these will be the exact lines. However, 2/3 of both of those lines could be the same. The Giroux-Couturier and Laughton-Vorobyev connections could be the same on opening night.
It is still way to early to start looking at line combinations. But, these two seem to be possible line starters for later in preseason.
The more interesting part to the session came in the second half of the morning. After changing ice sheets, Wayne Simmonds was absent from his line and nowhere to be found. Then, midway through the second half, Brian Elliott left early. Neither player seems to have an injury. From what it looks like, both guys are coming off injuries and are taking their time getting back into form.
Then, for part three of the morning session, the penalty kill was addressed. The forwards worked on dot rotation and forcing the puck wide and to the boards. The defense worked on triangle rotation protecting the high slot. From the look of it, the Flyers will be using a more direct and more movement based penalty kill this season.
Now, to morning interviews.

Afternoon Session – Group 2
The afternoon session focused more on the defense. Some key pairings were in the afternoon. From last year’s opening night, Shayne Gostisbehere and Robert Hagg were back together. Also, Travis Sanheim and Radko Gudas. Both of these pairings may be together at some point during the season.
For the forward side of things, it was about one line and one line only. van Riemsdyk-Patrick-Voracek is almost set in stone as the Flyers 2nd line. This line was very dynamic and over-powering during the second half of the session in team drills.
The other notably from group 2 was the goal-tending. One of the more important camp battles is the backup goalie to starter Brian Elliott. Group 2 showcased the top candidates in Michal Neuvirth and Alex Lyon.
It was also a good time to see one of the more notable Flyers prospects. Morgan Frost shined a couple times with Dale Weise and Michael Raffl.
Now, to afternoon interviews.
