Philadelphia Deja Vu? There Are Some Weird Similarities In The Eagles And Phillies Rebirths
What is going on with the “deja vu” energy in the City of Brotherly Love right now. First, the Eagles opening night win was a carbon copy of their playoff win against the same team last season. Now, could that same “Philadelphia Deja Vu” energy be headed the across Pattison Ave and the Philadelphia Phillies way?
The Phillies rebuild has been a long process that has taken the past 5 years. However, with the dawn of the 2018 season, the Phillies were seen to change that.
Entering the season, this was seen as the make or break it season for the Phillies rebuild. Whether or not the teams long internal rebuild would work out or not. And, if the Phillies high quality prospects were ready to make the jump to the big leagues.
Well, lets look to see how they are doing.
This year, the Phillies new core has taken a big step towards a great future. It was the first full MLB season for some future key pieces for the Phillies. The “Ace” the Phillies have always known they had took one more step forward to becoming one of the leagues elite starters. But, it has provided some light on who will be here longterm and who is seen as stopgaps.
However, the one thing is for sure. The hype train this team was riding for most of the season has ran out of stream. Yes, unfortunately, this Phillies team is nearing the end of the road and their season.
At the moment, the Phillies currently sit 6.5 games out of a playoff spot with 18 games left to play. Now, it is still very possible for the Phillies to make the playoffs with 7 games left against the division leader the Atlanta Braves. However, with their play since the trade deadline, don’t get your hopes up.
But, have we seen this before somewhere? Has another Philadelphia sports team given the Philadelphia faithful hope to quickly and couldn’t withstand it?
Insert the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Philadelphia Eagles won its first Super Bowl last season and gave the city of Philadelphia its first title since the 2008 Phillies. But, where did their Super Bowl run come from? Lets take a look.
After the Eagles fired Chip Kelly with one game left in the 2015 season, the Eagles were looking for a new leader. Many high praised NFL coaches and coordinators were considered. But, one former face stood out the most. Many would say an out of the box choice. However, the Eagles saw something in head coach Doug Pederson they did not see in anybody else.
Then, it came time for the Eagles to bring in a leader. A leader that would take this team to the next level. And, through a great job by the front office, the Eagles somehow moved up from 13 in the draft to #2 and drafted their leader, Carson Wentz.
Look at the season. The Eagles started the season 3-0. Had the city jumping. Had the league on its toes. But, then the hype train hit a wall.
So, what does this have to do with the Phillies? What about that “Philadelphia Deja Vu”?
Well, everything that happened to the Eagles last year, has happened to the Phillies this year. The Phillies were in need of a new coach. They went with an out of the box candidate in Gabe Kepler. A leader was born in Philadelphia and on a national scale in Aaron Nola. But, here is where the real “Philadelphia Deja Vu” comes in.
Remember the hot start by the Phillies. Remember the hype this team had around the city and the league. Where did that go? It went away just like the Eagles hype last season.
There is some weird “Philadelphia Deja Vu” going around right now and I don’t know what will happen next. I AM NOT SAYING THE SAME THING WILL HAPPEN TO THE PHILLIES THAT HAPPENED TO THE EAGLES NEXT SEASON. But, if I was a betting man, I would put some money down on the Phillies winning the 2019 World Series because of this weird “Philadelphia Deja Vu” magic.
