Is Trading Down From The 32nd Overall Pick The Eagles Best Bet?

When the Eagles won the Super Bowl, they assured one thing. Yes, the first championship in franchise history. However, they also have the honor of the 32nd overall pick. Oh yeah, and announced to the whole league as their champion.

Now, the champion stuff is all good in some cases. But, this Eagles team is already focused on getting the next Super Bowl win back to the city of Brotherly Love. With that, they will have to make some hard decisions and have already made some hard decisions this offseason.

The Eagles released life-long Eagle, Brent Celek, and have let multiple valuable role-playing pieces walk, Beau Allen and Patrick Robinson to name a few. Even though they were tough moves to make, the Eagles are moving on and bringing in other guys to replace them.

With Vinny Curry more than likely becoming a cap casualty, the Eagles acquired 3x time Pro Bowl DE Michael Bennett. The Eagles traded away Torrey Smith and got back Daryl Worley, who will help with CB / S depth.

If one thing this stands out on this team, its their mentality from last season of the next man up. However, it doesn’t stop with the players. No. The front office and coaching staff has that same mentality.

When Howie Roseman regained the ropes, he was left with next to nothing and needed to work that Howie magic. Roseman accomplished that by somehow trading from number 13 all the way down to #2 to draft the franchise, Carson Wentz.

But, that isn’t the only time Howie has worked his magic in trades. Just 3 months later, after the franchise, Carson Wentz, impressed so much in training camp and preseason, Roseman somehow got a 1st round pick for the often injured Sam Bradford.

This would start a 2-year roller coaster that ended on February 4th, 2018 in a Super Bowl victory.

Now, with no cap space to work with and key roles still need to be filled, Roseman has to look to the draft to fill them. However, the Eagles only have 6 picks in this draft and only 1 in the first 3 rounds.

Cause for concern?

A little. But, cause for Roseman to work his magic again and get more value instead of 1 pick? Absolutely.

With the Eagles winning the Super Bowl, they get the last pick in the 1st round. That pick, #32, is the most valuable 1st round pick other than #1 overall.

The reason?

Well, 1st round picks are the only draft selections you can give 5-year contracts too. This is huge for a team that sees a guy they like and wants an extra year of control on him. So, if a team, say the Colts, who have three 2nd round draft picks, wanted a guy to have an extra year to develop, could they come calling?

Roseman sits in an interesting position at #32 because he knows what he needs. But, he also knows what he doesn’t have and they both go hand in hand.

Therefore, if a team in the top 10 of the 2nd round comes calling, should Roseman trade down?

From a writer’s standpoint yes. From an organization standpoint, it depends on who they want. I know for a fact that the Eagles are looking at linebackers with their 1st selection. Names to keep in mind are Leighton Van Esch from Boise State, Rashaan Evans from Alabama, and Malik Jefferson from Texas.

All 3 of these guys will be available at #32. However, if the Eagles were to trade down, they cant fall too far. They have to take in account that if they fall down the order too far that none of them will be available when they pick.

One thing is for sure. Once again Howie Roseman is in the driver seat. But, will he pull off another trade like the ones he already has? Remember he has been playing Madden 18 with trades set on easy with the trades he has made already.
