Travis Konecny Embracing Leadership Role
Entering his 8th season as a Philadelphia Flyer, it’s safe to say that Travis Konecny has stepped into a leadership role for this young Flyers team. Even at only 26 years old having been around and gone through coaches and management changes, it’s safe to say TK has seen a lot in his 7 years here.
With Couturier and Atkinson missing all of last season the Flyers relied heavily on Scott Laughton, Travis Konecny, and JVR to lead their forward group. With JVR no longer here and Coots and Cam back healthy, maybe Konecny would let those guys lead the charge. That’s not the case though and it has been noticeable throughout camp.
Konecny has fully embraced being a part of the leadership group and it’s clear some of the younger guys have looked to him for some advice. Leadership is something that is not new to Konecny as he was the captain of his Junior team the Ottawa 67’s back in 2015.
With the young roster of the Flyers it will be important for a guy like Konecny to be able to help the even younger guys get to that next level in the NHL. For example, a guy like Tyson Forester who hasn’t been as impressive as we would like to see early on in camp. If Konecny can take him under his wing and show him the ups and downs he has had to go through during his career it could be a good lesson for Forester to learn from.
I asked Travis about all the changes he has gone through since he’s been here and how that has helped him grow as a leader for this team, here is what he had to say…
“Yea, there’s been lots of changes. Staff, players, and theres been plenty of things that have helped us grow the players that have been here the whole time. Even last year putting us in some situations that we probably wouldn’t have been in with Coots and Cam being out. But it’s definitely helped a lot of us and as far as a leadership role, I just try to show up and work hard everyday. I’m not a big talker in the room, I mean I chat a lot when it’s not the important stuff I don’t like the limelight when it’s the serious stuff I leave that to some of the other guys.”
While he may not be the most vocal guy in the locker room it has been pretty clear that Travis Konecny is one of the guys that the younger guys look to. Hopefully Konecny can have another big year for this Flyers team and help be a key part of this team getting back into the playoff hunt.
